About the event
Join tour guide Avril Nanton for a walking tour of Tottenham, starting at Costa Coffee on Tottenham High Road and ending at Bruce Castle Museum. Avril is the author of Black London: History, Art & Culture in Over 120 Places and the Black History London Map. On this walk, she explores the history of women in Haringey, with a particular focus on Black women who lived, worked in, or visited Tottenham.
Taking place during Women’s History Month, the walk follows the historic heart of Tottenham, from the High Road to Bruce Castle. Along the route, you’ll discover the stories of local Black women from the past three centuries who left their mark on the area. These include nurse Sister Freda in 1900, the Seven Sisters who planted trees, and the woman behind Tottenham’s first Black comedy club.
