Brixton was dubbed London's Harlem by the American actor Will Smith - it was a compliment! Despite its difficult, often challenging, past, Brixton has become a place for those who want to study and understand the ‘black experience’. It has also been an inspiration for writers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
This virtual tour of Brixton will include references to black literature such as Andrea Levy’s Small Island, Alex Wheatle’s Brixton Rock; also contemporary writers who are actively writing black literature for a wider audience.
Bring your favourite London history book to the tour and help compile a virtual reading list to share at the end of this presentation.
